Out of work? Thinking about starting a Made in America business? Get a few Alpacas, the llama's less aggressive and smaller cousin. An industry that thrived mostly in South America appears to have made its way north of the border, at least in New England, where the once-thriving textile industry that has taken a profound dive over the past few decades.
The fiber these Alpacas produce works well in winter apparel and comes in a variety of colors naturally, unlike wool and cotton. Its popularity has grown substantially over the past 10 years, helping domestic Alpaca owners to establish thriving businesses.
Chris Riley, president of the New England Alpaca Fiber Pool, recently told Fox Business that he's seen a 30-percent expansion.
Barbie Tilton, who has been “farming” the breed for more than 10 years, wanted a return on her investment. To her, the Alpaca is an “investment animal.” It doesn't hurt that she gets a tax break to boot, something that doesn't come with owning other livestock.
